01 Mission

Why we exist.

The problem, and the coalition built to address it.

Wild fish stocks are under pressure that no single company can relieve. Alternative seafood — plant-based, fermented, and cultivated — is one of the few routes to protein that does not require more fish from a finite ocean.

Future Ocean Foods was founded in 2023 to give that emerging sector a shared voice. We are a non-profit association, not a producer, not a fund, not a certifying body. Our role is to connect the companies working on alternative seafood and seaweed, to represent the sector to institutions and investors, and to accelerate the parts of the work that no single member can do alone.

We are headquartered in Nova Scotia and operate globally. Our membership spans plant-based seafood, precision fermentation, cultivated cells, seaweed ingredients, and the enabling technology that supports all four. Together, they represent one of the most research-intensive segments of the future food economy.

We are entering a new chapter — opening the organisation to new leadership and exploring a change in ownership structure that will let the network scale beyond its start-up phase. The mission does not change; the vehicle for it does.

02 The Category

Three routes to the same plate.

What "alternative seafood" actually means.
Route · 01

Plant-based

Seafood analogues built from plants, algae, and fungi — from whole-muscle salmon alternatives to konjac and seaweed-based shellfish. The most commercially mature route, and the one closest to scale.

Route · 02

Fermentation

Precision fermentation to produce the proteins and omega-3s that make seafood distinctive — heme, collagen, EPA and DHA — without the fish. Often used as an ingredient layer rather than a finished product.

Route · 03

Cultivated

Fish cells grown in bioreactors into edible tissue. The earliest stage and the most capital-intensive, with a long regulatory path — and the highest potential ceiling for structural fidelity.

Who is in the room.

A representative sample of member clusters, by region.

EU Europe 18 members
APAC Asia-Pacific 12 members

Open membership

Start-ups, established producers, ingredient suppliers, research groups, and capital providers are all eligible. Membership is annual and reviewed by the secretariat.

Global working groups

Members collaborate on regulatory pathways, consumer research, and shared infrastructure — the work that is more efficient done together than alone.

No exclusivity

Membership does not restrict a company's other partnerships or affiliations. The association is a shared platform, not a walled garden.

04 Join

How to get involved.

Membership, partnership, and the next chapter.
01

Enquire

Write to the secretariat with a short note about your organisation, the route you work in, and why you want to join the network.

02

Review

The secretariat reviews applications against membership criteria — active work in alternative seafood, a real operating presence, and alignment with the association's mission.

03

Onboard

New members are introduced to the working groups, the member directory, and the association's research and policy channels.

Partnership & acquisition

Future Ocean Foods is exploring a transition of leadership and ownership as it moves beyond its founding phase. Organisations interested in acquiring, hosting, or partnering with the association are invited to write directly.

We are also open to research collaborations, institutional partnerships, and media enquiries relating to the alternative seafood sector.
